All the major airport in Scotland are directed by Highlands and Islands Airport and so is the Barra Airport operated by them.This airport is one of its kind in the world as it just uses the Traigh Mhor beach as the runway. Overall, the beach comprises of three runways which are simply noticeable by wooden poles at the either ends.

Why is it unique

The runway disappears by the occurrence of high tides and the flights are otherwise rescheduled by the motion of the ocean. Flights are even scheduled in night light where vehicle are used to illuminate the airport runway. Peculiar maintenance for the aircraft's wheels and bearings is essential for encountering any accidents. Barra island is home to Twin Otters aircraft. Barra airfield is licensed under the authorized licence of Highlands and Islands Airport Ltd for flights only during day light. There is a restriction for night landing due to inconvenience but emergency landings during night is permissible.

Barra airport is in use since 1933, before that it was one of the most visited beaches in Scotland. The beach is very magnificent with the runway formed by white compacted sand. At times, when the airport is inactive the runway is a popular hotspot for cockles hunting and sunbathing. Visitors at the beach can make out the arrival of an aircraft through the sign of the windsock. There are altogether three immense runways at Barra Airport which facilitates three aircraft to land or takeoff at a specific timings. Barra Airport is one of its kind in the world whose runway is wiped out twice a day on the arrival of high tides. It is a unique beach airport used for commercial purposes.
