The entire phase of the airport is scheduled to be completed till 2017 and the airport is partly opened in 2010. Prior to its opening the airport was also referred as Jebel Ali International Airport and Dubai World Central Airport. The airport is named after the former Dubai ruler. The airport is settled in Dubai World Central which is one of the largest integrated platform in the world which comprises of residents and commercial complexes.If built according to planned the airport will host much more traffic than the busiest airport in the world Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Why is it unique

When fully built Al Maktoum International Airport will be the largest airport in the world which can handle around 120 million travelers and 12 million tons of cargo each year. The airport is ten times bigger than Dubai International Airport and Dubai Cargo Village.Airbus was the first aircraft which landed on the grounds of the airport on 28th February in 2011.By 2013 the airport will hold the largest freight in the world with a capacity of 12 million tones each year. Its runway is estimated to simultaneously offer many takeoffs and landings at a time.

RUS Avaition, European cargo services and Aerospace Consortium are the airlines who presently serve the Al Maktoum International Airport. Currently, fifteen airlines are on an agreement to serve this airport in near future.This airport is designed for handling every type of jumbo aircraft like Airbus A380. Construction of the 16 cargo terminals is entirely completed which has a capacity to host 12 million tones of cargo.
