lukla airport Tenzing-Hillary Airport is one of the smallest Airports which is situated on the lap of Mount Everest in Solukhumbu district in the eastern part of Nepal. It was built in 1964 by Edmund Hillary. This airport was recognized as Lukla Airport in Nepal , but after the death of Edmund Hillary in 2008, it was renamed as Tenzing-Hillary Airport as an honor to Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary who were the first persons to reach the summit of 8,848 meter, the Mount Everest in 1953. Lukla Airport is the one of the diciest airport in the world due to its complex geographical structure highly changeable atmospheric conditions,changing climates, slopes and short runway. Landing plane in the Lukla Airport is the most challenging job for every pilot.

Lukla is a small village which is famous as the entry point or the base camp to Mount Everest. All the visitors halt at this destination before leaving for Everest. Tenzing-Hillary airport is known as the third highest airport in the world. Lukla airport has 527 meters sloping runway due to which it is the most dangerous airport to land.Upward sloping runway is unique to slow down the speed of incoming planes as well as downward sloping helps to increase the speed when it takes off.

It is impossible to land up the heavy airbuses in this airport due to its limited area. There is high possibility of accident even for small Twin Otter airplane. The history of this airport reveals that many local as well as international personalities have lost their lives in this airport due to horrible accident. There are very few airlines which operate their flights from Kathmandu such as- Nepal Airlines, Yeti Airlines, Buddha Airlines, Sita Airlines, Gorkha Airlines, Tara Airlines, Sangrila Airlines and Agni Airlines.Lukla airport record the event of accident almost every year so,traveling through the Lukla airport is one of the most adventurous activities for the local as well as international visitors.
