Having a single runway, this airport is situated at a height of 3294 feet which was systematically developed from 2007 by extending the territories of hillside. The construction and development of the airport was carried out continuously and made 7,096 feet in 2009 by extending the southern part of the runway. After the extended area of the airport, it became easy for landings and takeoffs for large airplanes such as- Boeing 727, Douglas DC-8 and a C-17 Globmaster. There are four gates and two terminals, the new terminal serves international flights and old one is for domestic flights. There are more than ten airlines which operate international flights for different countries. The major airlines are: Delta Airlines History reveals that there are around 13 records of accidents from 1962 to 2011 where many people lost their lives. Now, this airport links Honduras with different cities of the world such as- Miami in the US, La Ceiba, San Lorenzo, San Pedrosula, Roatan, Panama City, Atlanta, Guatemala, San Salvador, San Jose de Costa Rica and so on. Landing and takeoffs of the plane in this airport is scary for pilots as well as the passengers due to its complex structure. |
